Pen Pen TriIcelon is a triathlon racing game that puts your cutesy animal through three legs: waddling, swimming, and sliding on its belly. There are four different tracks, each with five different variations. You're not going to spend hours playing it as there are only 4 courses and nothing unlockable which is ok. Playing the game is extremely simple. The moment they are approved we approve submissions twice a day. There is some occasional slowdown when all the racers crowd onto one screen while sliding downhill at high speeds, but it's fairly rare. Each of the 4 courses has 3 difficulty settings and they inaccurately named; short, middle and long I may be off because I just snapped my disk and I can't go back to take a look.
When you finish first in a race, you are awarded with gifts. Product description Disc s only. This game can be played with up to four players. This Dreamcast game takes you through four beautiful courses filled with brightly-colored, detailed graphics. Theres also more than a few instances of chance where it's seemingly completely random or unfair who gets tripped up by certain obstacles, but in our case these are almost always accompanied by extremely loud laughter and cursing at each other and the game not unlike mario party. Three of these were difficulty variants while another would have you racing against characters of the same type, and the final one would have you race against the game's only hidden character. The premise is this: You race as one of eight seven normal, one secret penguin-type creatures called PenPens through four different courses.
Disc s are professoinally cleaned. Funny animal characters compete in a madcap triathlon on ice. It won't take more than two or three hours to unlock all the track variations, as the computer racers don't put up much of a fight. These two features, and the game's cartoonish concept, make Penpen TriIcelon the most kid-friendly game available as of the Dreamcast's launch. There's a bit more pop-up on the split-screen multiplayer, but overall it manages to do a nice job. Running is the slowest and most tedious, while sliding and swimming are much faster and a lot more fun. These were particularly awkward because for the most part there was nothing you could do to avoid these hazards.
Hopefully this is a much more accurate review of the game. Once a year, they compete in a grand three-part race of belly-surfing, ice-walking, and swimming: the TriIcelon. As it is easy to pick up and its quirky characters will quickly catch your guests attention. And if you miss with the dash, you briefly stop moving which is there mostly to keep people from simply dashing their way through the entire course. The whole walking segment moves at an incredibly slow, and if you're already ahead by a long shot, boring pace. More of these items are unlocked as you play the game. Bizarre cartoon penguins and half-penguins, the Penpens live on an icy world far away.
Pen Pen Tri-icelon was a racing game for Dreamcast staring lovable penguins called Pen-Pens. Also, aside from the walking leg of the race, the game moves at a pretty fast pace. Meet the objectives and you move to the next level. The dash jerks you forward quickly in an attempt to bump your opponents out of the way. Kids and the young at heart are sure to get a kick out of the goofy Penpen characters. Sort of like a parlor trick.
This might have something to do with the fact that watching our ridiculous looking characters try to waddle around an obstacle course is hilarious. Perhaps too cute and strange to appeal to the hard-core gaming crowd, but if you're looking for a game for your new Dreamcast that Aunt Marge and little Timmy can and will play, this is it. Unlike other racing games though where you hold a button for gas or tilt forward to run, you have to tap the A button in a rhythmic manner to match your strokes with the motion of your Pen Pen. For the walking portions all you had to do was push the analog stick in the direction you wanted your Pen Pen to go, while occasionally jumping, swimming required you to press the A button for your character to do a forward stroke, sliding used essentially the same controls as swimming however it was more beneficial to tap A in a rhythmic fashion in order for your Pen Pen to get the most distance. Finally, a game that truly captures the spirit of, uh, penguin racing.
An up-to-four-player versus mode is also available. There are 4 different race courses, through which your Pen Pen will slide, swim, and walk. This is a game to play split-screen with a group of friends and when you do that it's an absolute blast. While PenPen won't win any awards for gameplay, the control is tight. I really had no problem with this game until I found out I couldn't beat the long levels.
Each racecourse features all three events, tied together with a unique theme such as Candy Land, Haunted House, or Toy Land. Courses at higher difficulty levels were longer than ones at earlier levels, and featured four events rather than the normal three. But if you're talking PenPen Trilcelon, that's exactly what you get. It moves at 60 frames per second through most of the one-player game but does sometimes slow to around 30 but stays at a steady 30 in four-player split-screen games. The goal is to walk, swim, and slide across the finish line the fastest.
If you like kitschy, wacky, Japanese games, PenPen is for you. Cream an ice-cream cone woman to Horrorman the embodiment of all that is scary a vampire, a mummy, a ghost and more. I think perhaps for the kiddies it will keep them entertained. For a boost of speed, steer into the rainbow-colored boosts which will jet your PenPen forward. However the game only has 4 levels and not enough variety in its game play. The goal is to walk, swim, and slide across the finish line the fastest. Winning races would grant you accessories for you to decorate your Pen Pen with.
There are three modes, including a standard Trilcelon, Time Attack and Versus Modes. Having said that i do think the game has some value. This is useful when sliding down extremely steep hills, but it also makes steering much more difficult. However after a hour or two i think people will get bored of it. When thinking about racing games, it's not often that penguins, hats and really enthusiastic announcers come to mind. Take control of your own PenPen and enter him or her in the events on four distinct courses: Sweets, a course made up of cookies and candy; Toys, which is constructed from building blocks and other toys; Horrors, which features a graveyard and a haunted house; and Jungle, which is full of wild animals and residential huts.
